A first date can be a nerve-wracking experience, with much of the anxiety coming before the hour you are supposed to meet. There are so many things to consider–what to wear, how to act, what to say–that even a little careful planning beforehand can make your first date go as smoothly as you would wish it.

Everyone needs to plan

It is not just women who get nervous before a first date–men also do, and both sexes often worry about the same things. Perhaps the most important aspect to get right is how you look.

While you naturally want to look your best, it is important you dress in clothing in which you feel comfortable. This does not mean baggy clothing and sensible shoes, but ‘going out’ outfits  in your style. So if you are a girl who normally wears long skirts and high-necked tops, it might be a bad idea to choose a miniskirt and a low-cut blouse for your first date, because you would be constantly worrying about how much skin is on show.

If you want to look your best and appear as if you have made an effort, attempt a smart/casual style. This should make you appear neither over nor under-dressed, wherever you are going on your date.

You will also need to pay attention to how your hair is styled, as this is what many people notice about others upon first meeting. An unkempt hairstyle can make you feel unattractive, so book yourself in at your salon for a cut and blow-dry. If, however, your hair is not as long as you would like it, you could always enhance your own hair with quality hair extensions, such as those found Preparing for that anticipated first dateat Hair Planet. With these kinds of accessories, it would be almost impossible to have a bad hair day.

Everyone is Nervous

Nerves are natural for first dates, but do not succumb to the temptation to ease anxiety by having a few pre-date drinks. People who are a little drunk may be fun if they are with other people, but your date is unlikely to appreciate your uninhibited behaviour. Monitor how you much drink during the evening, to avoid being drunk by the end.

It is human nature to exaggerate, to make ourselves appear more interesting, but more often than not the lies are easily detectable. You want to appear interesting and have something to say for yourself, not least because the more interests you have, the better the chances of landing on something that you both enjoy. The point of a date is to get to know the other person better, but try not to interrogate them or vice versa. Make sure you ask some questions, but otherwise try to let the conversation flow naturally.

Give your first date the best chance of success by dressing to suit yourself, keeping a clear head and making honest conversation.
